Who was George Frideric Handel?
George Frideric Handel (16851759) was a German-British Baroque composer who is best known for his operas, oratorios, and instrumental compositions. Born in Halle, Germany, Handel showed a remarkable talent for music from a young age. He studied in Italy, where he absorbed the Italian style of opera, which would heavily influence his later works.
In 1712, Handel moved to London, where he became a naturalised British citizen and spent most of his career. He gained fame for his operas but eventually shifted his focus to oratorios, a genre he helped popularsze. His most famous work, the oratorio *Messiah,* is still widely performed today, especially the “Hallelujah” chorus.
Handel’s music is known for its dramatic expression, melodic richness, and grandiose style. He was a master of both sacred and secular music, and his compositions had a lasting impact on Western classical music. Despite facing challenges such as financial difficulties and health issues, Handel remained a prolific composer until his death in 1759.
